The Vons supermarket chain announced the closure of one of its Glendora markets Monday.

The supermarket, located at 431 E. Arrow Hwy., is slated to close September 23, according to Carlos Illingworth, the Southern California Director of Communications with Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions.

The decision to close the Arrow Highway supermarket was made August 26.

The Vons on Arrow Highway is closing due to lackluster performance, Illingworth said, with officials choosing to focus on growing the Vons brand elsewhere.

“Like all retailers, we are constantly evaluating the performance of our stores. Closing an underperforming store is always a tough decision, but we are focused on growing our business by being the favorite local supermarket, and running great stores where people love to shop,” Illingworth said in a statement to GCN.

In a letter sent to Vons store directors and SoCal division employees, Division President Lori Raya said the labor and human resources team will work with each affected employee and their labor union to find other work for them.

Vons is a subsidiary of Albertsons, which also operates Pavilions supermarkets.

Vons’ parent company, Safeway, was acquired by Albertsons in January 2015 for $9.2 billion, forcing the Federal Trade Commission to order Albertson’s to shed some of its stores.

Haggen, Inc. acquired 146 Vons and Alberston’s supermarkets as part of the FTC order, but eventually went bankrupt. Haggen sued Albertsons for about $1 billion in September 2015, alleging Albertsons wanted to eliminate Haggen as a competitor.

Albertsons eventually settled with Haggen in January 2016 for $5.75 million.

The Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions offices are located in Fullerton.
