Glendora Middle Schoolers Lending Support To Harvey Students

Students at Sandburg Middle School in Glendora are reaching out to students in Texas who were affected by Hurricane Harvey.

AVID and Leadership students adopted classrooms that have been impacted by Harvey. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The AVID students made a welcome back video to one school and both AVID and Leadership will be raising funds to support these teachers and their students.

Two Sandburg teachers, Kristy Carrigan and Kristy Espino, are helping lead the charge which is supporting students at Miller Intermediate School in Pasadena Texas.

They are currently collecting school supplies, cash donations and Amazon gift cards. Beginning next week they will also be selling support bracelets.

“AVID class is trying to raise enough to sponsor the AVID shirts for the students at Miller Intermediate School in Pasadena, TX. Their shirts are a necessary supply for field trips and school events and many of the families do not have the extra funds to purchase the shirt while rebuilding and recovering from the storm”, said Kristy Espino, the AVID Coordinator.

The Leadership is also focused on collecting supplies to replace ones that were damaged/ruined by the storm. They have the generous support of an anonymous local business. The owners of this business have agreed to ship all donations at their expense AND have agreed to a donation match up to $500.

Any donations can be accepted in the Sandburg front office, located at 819 W. Bennett Ave, Glendora, Ca. 91741

The video the students made is below and starts with a message of support which reads:

“Welcome back to school Miller Falcons!

The following message is from Sandburg Middle School ‘s AVID students.

We’re thinking about you as you return to school and we want you to know that we’re going to work to support you as you rebuild after Hurricane Harvey!”
