Local Scout Troop Raising Items For Glendora Seniors

A local Scout Troop here in Glendora has taken it upon themselves to help our senior citizens.

Recently, Kevin Cave, a 17 year-old Senior at GHS, started a fundraiser to collect items needed by senior citizens in our area. Cave is part of Venture Crew 491 here in Glendora and the whole troop is taking part in the collection, which runs until February 12.

The fundraiser, called “Support Our Senior Citizens” or “S.O.S.C.”,  is focusing on ways that senior citizens interact with each other and activities while at the local senior centers. Some examples of needed items are:

  • New and Gently Used Books
  • Books on Tape
  • DVD’s
  • Games

In addition to the La Fetra Center on Foothill Blvd, some of the items will go to Glendora Gardens Senior Community on North Wabash Ave. and Heritage Oaks Senior Apartments on South Glendora Ave.

Some items will also reach the home bound seniors in our community, unable to leave their home due to physical circumstances. All of these locations have a need for additional activities to help the seniors with interaction and entertainment.

Cave, while thinking about a project that would not only fill a need, wanted to make sure it supported something he appreciated.

“The motivation for my project came from several areas. One of them is the La Fetra Senior Center itself. It is a great organization and I wanted to help as much as possible”, Cave said.

Debbie Dozal, the Human Services Superintendent for the City of Glendora, was happy for the help from Venture Crew 491.

“The La Fetra Center is a volunteer driven activity center for mature adults and we are very proud of Kevin and his troop for taking on this project to benefit our participants and older adults in our community. The donated items will be much appreciated, especially by those who may be home bound”, Dozal told GCN.

If anyone in the community would like to join the Venture Crew 491 efforts, drop off is available at the following locations:

Additionally, The La Fetra Center is constantly looking for volunteers to fill the needs of all the many aspects they provide to our seniors.

The center offers meals, groups and clubs, computer classes, trips, tours, personal development classes, art, dance, music, language classes and much more. All of these programs as well as the general hours of operation have the need for volunteers to help them continue, even simply someone working the reception desk and answering phones is a big help.
