City Plans To Give Grand Welcome To Special Olympics Delegation

The city’s Community Services Department has planned a day of activities and dining for the 91 delegates from South Africa set to arrive for the approaching Special Olympics World Games in late July.

The delegation of 70 athletes, 16 coaches, four general staff and one medical staff will visit Glendora July 23. Community Services will transport them from their lodgings at Azusa Pacific University and give them tours of the city, treat them to local foods and end with a parade through the Glendora Village.

In-N-Out will treat the delegation to lunch at Centennial Heritage Park where they will also tour the park. The delegation will also tour Rubel Castle and be given a hometown parade, City Staff said.

The parade will conclude with a meet and greet at City Hall with Glendora council members. Honorary medals will be given to the delegation on behalf of the city.

The athletes, coaches and staff will be treated to a concert at Finkbiner Park where they will be served a traditional South African dinner called a Braai to be donated by the South African Consulate-General Office from Los Angeles.

The city was chosen as a host city for the Special Olympic World Games last December.

“The city is honored to host South Africa’s Special Olympics athletes and share Glendora’s traditions with them. This is a great opportunity to welcomed and celebrate the delegation of athletes’ success while … taking part in cultural activities and sites unique to Glendora,” said Community Services Director La Shawn Butler.

The city is asking for residents to participate in the parade, help line the route on Glendora Avenue to cheer the delegation, as well as attend the concert at Finkbiner, City Staff said.

Residents who attend the Finkbiner concert and dinner can sign up at City Hall or at the Crowther Teen Center, 241 W. Dawson Ave., for $25.

At least 20 volunteers are also needed to help staff pass out flags and prepare balloons for the parade route.

While the Glendora City Council has already approved $10,000 to help fund the event, an additional $5,000 in donations is needed.

So far, no donations have been received yet, Butler said.

Anyone wishing to donate towards the additional $5,000 to the Community Services Foundation can mail checks to 417 W. Foothill Blvd., Glendora, CA, 91741.

Cash donations can be sent to the Community Services Department at City Hall, 116 E. Foothill Blvd.

All donations are tax deductible.
