The Community Services department recently announced the completion of the artificial turf project at the Louie Pompei Memorial Sports Park and wants to celebrate the occasion.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at the park, 1100 S. Valley Center Ave., on Saturday, September 12 starting at 8 a.m.
Artificial turf was being placed on field three, the eastern-most playing surface at Pompei Park. Field three was closed from May 4 to August 31 while construction took place.
Discussion for artificial turf started back in April of 2013 as Community Services officials mulled various options to save maintenance costs, field down time and water usage.
Annual re-sodding of field three forced its closure to allow the grass time to grow, preventing patrons from being able to use the field for months at a time. Artificial turf can allow patrons to play year round, Community Service previously said.
City officials expect to save 1.8 million gallons of water per year.
