Historical Society To Present Program On Civil War History

The Glendora Historical Society will offer a presentation regarding a unique aspect of the American Civil War at the Glendora Public Library in January.

The free program set for Monday, January 26 at 7 p.m., will focus on the U.S. Balloon Corps., considered by some historians as a precursor to the United States Air Force. The program is expected to last about one hour, followed by an intermission and short meeting.

The program will be held in the Bidwell Forum of the Glendora Public Library.

Civil War enthusiasts Steven and Patrice Demory will speak about the Balloon Corps and founder Thaddeus Lowe. The Balloon Corps, formed on July 25, 1861, was commanded by Lowe with a main goal to perform reconnaissance, watching Confederate troop movements and other operations.

Lowe was appointed as Chief of the Aeronautic Department of the Army of the Potomac by President Abraham Lincoln.

The Demorys are from Anaheim and travel to Civil War re-enactments, schools and other events to discuss aspects of the American Civil War.

The Glendora Public Library is located at 140 South Glendora Avenue.
