Each year Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison, awards $1.2 million in scholorships to 30 high school seniors. These are students who are interested in and perusing STEM majors, which are science, technology, engineering and math fields.

Steven Smith of Glendora High School was named a 2018 Edison Scholar and received a $40,000 STEM scholarship from Edison International. Wednesday morning, a group of delegates from Edison International, met at Glendora High School with school administrators and Glendora City News to surprise Smith in his classroom, with the scholarship.
Smith, who will be a computer sciences major, believes that anyone should be able to utilize technology and the internet with little training based on ease of use, according to his scholarship video he had sent in.
“I hope for a future where technology is not only available, but easy to use. One step in the right direction that I would want to pursue would be to continue to make online interfaces simpler and computers cheaper for the public”, Smith said.
Edison International supports students that will be in our future workforce advancing the country and world through STEM developments.

To date, since 2006, $8.7 million has been given to 610 senior students living within SCE’s 50,000 square mile radius. Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.0, demonstrate a financial need and plan to be a full-time undergraduate in a STEM field.
