The Glendora Police Department is continuing its work against drunk driving with a planned DUI/driver license checkpoint Friday.
The checkpoint will be held at an undisclosed location this Friday, May 29 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. May 30.
Police officers stationed at the checkpoint will check each stopped driver for signs of drug or alcohol impairment, while other officers will check for proper licensing. Specially trained officers will also examine drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs, which is increasingly being seen as a cause of impaired diving, according to Glendora Police in a written statement.
Authorities cite DUI checkpoints as an effective method in reducing the volume of traffic-related injuries and deaths caused by drunk or drugged driving, with such accidents bing reduced by as much as 20 percent. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana also cause impaired driving in addition to illegal narcotics, Glendora Police said.
DUI checkpoints are established in areas with statistically higher frequencies of related collisions and DUI arrests.
Funding for this checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
