An alleged DUI driver fell asleep behind the wheel Tuesday night and tried to drive away after officers boxed her in.
The incident took place at the intersection of northbound Glendora Avenue at Foothill Boulevard around 10:34 p.m. Arriving officers blocked the driver of a Solar City car from the front by parking their squad cars up against her vehicle. As officers approached the driver, she woke up and tried to drive away, police said.
The driver, identified as 53-year-old Cheryl Stamps of Los Angeles, attempted to accelerated and her car’s tires spun against the pavement.
Stamps then drove in reverse, nearly hitting a Glendora police officer. After rolling forward a little, Stamps stopped and Glendora officers detained her.
“I think she was confused. She wasn’t trying to escape or anything,” said Sgt. Marty Barrett of Glendora Police.
Barrett added it is common practice for officers to box possible DUI drivers in, as they may attempt to drive off in their confusion.
Stamps was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or higher. Stamps was then issued a citation and released.
