Glendora will co-host the South African Special Olympics team Thursday, July 23 with a special lunch, city tour, parade, dinner and concert.
Organizers and city officials are asking residents to line Glendora Avenue on Thursday for the parade, which starts at 4 p.m. in the Village. The Crowther Teen Center will hold a poster making event Tuesday, July 21 for residents to create posters to help cheer on the South African delegation.
The Teen Center will provide the athlete’s names for residents to adorn the posters with.
The poster event will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Crowther Teen Center, 241 W. Dawson Avenue.
The parade will follow a route south on Glendora Avenue from Bennett Avenue and conclude with a meet and greet at City Hall with Glendora Council members.
The delegation of 70 athletes, 16 coaches and other staffers is being hosted by the city of Azusa, Azusa Pacific University and the city of Duarte.
The South African team will start their day in Glendora with a lunch provided by In N Out at Centennial Heritage Park, which they will tour afterwards.
The delegation will then tour Rubel Castle. The parade will follow afterwards with a traditional African dinner.
The night will conclude with a free concert at Finkbiner Park performed by Raymond Michael, an Elvis tribute. The concert will start at 6:30 p.m.
Only the parade and concert are open to the public.
