With the Christmas season around the corner, Glendora Police will conduct programs aimed at DUI prevention and taking impaired drivers off the road.
Police will first conduct a DUI checkpoint and roving patrols Friday, December 18. The checkpoint will be held at an undisclosed location. Saturday, December 19, Glendora Police will conduct their Know Your Limit Program at undisclosed bars in town, police announced in a written statement.
The Know Your Limit Program’s goal is to show the town’s bar patrons that it can take even a little alcohol to reach the .08 percent blood alcohol content, which can get a driver arrested.
An officer equipped with a breathalyzer will provide free breath-alcohol tests to willing volunteers, as well as answer questions about DUI. No one will be arrested if they are over the legal limit of .08, police said.
“We’re trying to educate people as to how little it actually takes to put you over the limit,” said Glendora
Police Chief Tim Staab in a written statement. “A drink, such as a 12-ounce beer or 4-ounce wine, contains 0.48 ounces of pure alcohol. Drinking on a full stomach only slows down how fast the alcohol goes through your system, but you’re still putting the same amount into your body,” he said.
The program is paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. In addition to Know Your Limit, the grant funds help pay for DUI checkpoints, patrols and school DUI educational programs.
